Centre’s strategic initiatives reshape Tripura’s communication landscape, says Transport Minister

Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury praised the transformative impact of various central government initiatives on the state’s communication infrastructure. Speaking at the virtual inauguration of the newly constructed Inland Waterways Transport Terminal in Srimantapur, Sonamura, under Sepahijala District, Chowdhury highlighted the concerted efforts to bolster bilateral maritime trade with neighboring Bangladesh.

Minister Chowdhury underscored the evolution of Tripura’s communication system, which now integrates road, rail, air, and waterways connectivity. He emphasized the pivotal role played by recent initiatives in facilitating trade, particularly citing the utilization of the Chittagong port for transporting Indian goods destined for the Northeastern region.

Highlighting the newfound ease of access for traders from Kolkata, Chowdhury noted the significance of routes connecting Chittagong/Mongla to various destinations including Agartala (Tripura), Dawki (Meghalaya), Sutarkandi (Assam), and Srimantpur (Tripura), with Bangladesh’s approval.

The minister emphasized the crucial link provided by the 93 km Sonamura-Daudkandi waterway, hailing it as a milestone for Tripura’s communication network. He reiterated the importance of a robust communication system for economic development, emphasizing the state’s comprehensive connectivity in all directions.

Chowdhury also stated the significance of the ‘Act East’ policy initiated in 2014, aimed at strengthening ties with countries in the Gulf region and the wider Indo-Pacific region. Citing a recent report highlighting the potential for closer collaboration in the Gulf region, Chowdhury emphasized the north-eastern region’s pivotal role in advancing India’s cooperative framework with its eastern neighbors and Japan.
