Two nabbed in turtle and tortoise smuggling bust at Tripura-Mizoram Border

In a pre-dawn operation on Wednesday, Tripura Police thwarted an attempt to smuggle five rare species of turtles and tortoises across the Tripura-Mizoram border in Jampui Hill, situated in the North District of Tripura.

Acting on intelligence, officers from the Kanchanpur police station intercepted a vehicle at the Naka check post on the Jampui-Kanchanpur 44A-National Highway. The raid, spearheaded by Officer-in-Charge Uddyam Debbarma, yielded the discovery of two large sea turtles and three tortoises concealed within the vehicle.

A senior official from Tripura Police confirmed the arrests of two individuals, identified as Chandaram Reang and Khachuk Reang, in connection with the illicit trafficking of these reptiles. Both perpetrators are permanent residents of the Bru refugee camp located in Kanchanpur of the North District.
