A demonstration unfolded in front of Holy Cross School in Durjay Nagar, Agartala, as activists affiliated with Bajrang Dal voiced their discontent following an incident involving the removal of an “Om pendant” from a class VIII student by a female teacher.
According to Tutan Saha, the state coordinator of Bajrang Dal, the teacher, identified as Sonali Nandi, reportedly made disparaging remarks about Hindu religious beliefs while confiscating the pendant. This action prompted concerns about the atmosphere of intolerance within missionary schools, with Saha stressing that the organization advocates for religious harmony and does not target any specific faith.
During a meeting with the school’s Principal, a delegation from Bajrang Dal sought an apology from the teacher for her perceived negative portrayal of Hinduism. The teacher, in response, retracted her statement and returned the pendant, indicating a resolution to the conflict.
Saha stated the importance of school guidelines promoting inclusivity and respect for diverse religious beliefs. He urged educational institutions to foster an environment where individuals from all backgrounds feel comfortable practicing their faith.
Dr. Manoj Debnath, the father of the affected student, expressed disappointment with the school’s handling of the situation, highlighting the potential psychological impact on children. He emphasized the sentimental value of the pendant, which was a gift from his elder brother purchased at Somnath temple. Dr. Debnath also suggested initiatives like organizing Saraswati Puja on school premises to promote cultural understanding and respect for all religions, citing examples of cross-cultural celebrations like the worship of Jesus in Ramakrishna Math and Mission during Christmas.
