MakeMyTrip report highlights India’s travel trends

From Backpackers to Bon-Vivants – and everything in between –Indian travellers are not just reshaping the realm of domestic tourism but also commanding an increasingly important role in the ambit of international travel, leaving no corner of the globe too out of reach.  MakeMyTrip has released its India Travel Trends Report, analyzing the top travel behaviors of 100 million+ annual active users. The report provides insights into where, when, and how India travels, from both national and region-wise perspectives.

The report highlights a 25% increase in the number of people taking more than three trips per year in 2023 compared to 2019. Additionally, searches for destinations with or around religious spots in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities have grown by 97% in the last two years. Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip said, “Recognizing and catering to each traveller’s diverse behaviour will not only enhance travel experiences but also contribute significantly to the growth and development of the tourism industry.”

In 2023, Indian travelers’ searches for Ayodhya, Ujjain, and Badrinath increased by 585%, 359%, and 343% compared to 2022. Weekend getaways, such as Jim Corbett, Ooty, and Munnar, saw a 131% increase. Dubai, Bangkok, and Singapore were the most searched long-haul destinations, while London, Toronto, and New York were the most searched short-haul destinations. Emerging international destinations like Hong Kong, Almaty, Paro, Baku, Da Nang, and Tbilisi also experienced significant growth.
