The traditional attire known as ‘Risha’ has been granted the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) registration. The announcement was made by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who took to social media to share the news of ‘Tripura Risa’ receiving the GI tag. “Heartiest congratulations to all artisans, particularly those from the Killa Mahila Cluster promoted by TRLM, on ‘Tripura Risa’ receiving the GI Tag. This will undoubtedly elevate our signature garment to international recognition,” expressed the Chief Minister on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The registration of ‘Risha’ under Geographical Indication (GI) was facilitated by the Killa Mahila Cluster Level Federation (CLF) of Gomati District, with support from the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM). Renowned for its intricate designs, vibrant color combinations, and enduring texture, Tripura Risa Textile has earned accolades from international weaving experts. It holds significant cultural importance for the Tripuri community, with women skillfully crafting the fabric using a traditional loin loom technique.
The distinctive feature of ‘Risha’ lies in its bright color combinations and intricate textures, reflecting the rich artistic heritage passed down through generations. Tripuri artisans possess profound knowledge of multicolored design weaving, contributing to the fabric’s unique appeal.
