In a significant development, authorities seized a whopping Rs 77 lakh in cash from the West Bengal-bound Kanchanjunga Express in separate incidents near Agartala. The operation, conducted jointly by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP), resulted in the apprehension of three individuals from Maharashtra: Sudhir Wangmo, Krishna Wangmo, and Seema Shinde.

Their journey from Tripura to Maharashtra via West Bengal was interrupted as the authorities discovered Rs 9.56 lakh in cash during a thorough search at Agartala Railway Station, with no valid source of explanation provided. This comes on the heels of another startling discovery on February 14, when GRP officials stumbled upon Rs 66.57 lakh in unclaimed cash on the same express train.

The cash, predominantly in Rs 500 and Rs 200 notes, was found concealed near the lavatory of the B1 compartment. Despite extensive inquiries with passengers, the origins of the money remain a mystery. Both cases are now in the hands of authorities for further investigation, with the involvement of the Income Tax department looming large.
