Tripura’s growing potato sector has received a major boost with the International Potato Center (CIP), a Peru-based global research institution, pledging support to strengthen cultivation, innovation, and sustainability in the state. CIP Director General Simon Heck, who visited Tripura on Friday, described the state as a “successful industry that embraces innovation and research” and promised long-term collaboration. During his visit, Heck interacted with state officials, research institutions, horticulture experts, and local farmers to assess the progress made in potato farming. He noted that Tripura’s commitment to agricultural development is evident and aligns well with CIP’s mission of promoting food security, farmer welfare, and sustainable cultivation practices worldwide.

“We are here to engage with the State Government, research institutions, the horticulture department, and farmers to understand the progress made so far and to identify opportunities for future collaboration,” Heck said while addressing the media. He added that the International Potato Center is ready to share its expertise, technologies, and research findings to help Tripura enhance productivity and adopt climate-resilient farming practices. Impressed by the dedication of state officials and stakeholders, Heck assured that Tripura can count on CIP’s support in its journey toward becoming a leading hub for potato cultivation in the Northeast. “As an international research institution, we pledge our support to help Tripura achieve its goals in the potato sector,” he affirmed.

The visit is expected to pave the way for new partnerships in scientific research, innovation-driven farming, and improved seed development. Officials said the collaboration could also open opportunities for local farmers to access global best practices, strengthen market linkages, and increase income through higher yields.
