Chief Minister of Tripura Dr Manik Saha on Friday inaugurated and opened the State’s First Fish Festival organized at Purbasha Complex of Agartala city and said that the Government of Tripura is working to make the state self-reliant in fish production. Addressing the gathering and reporters in the inaugural session, the Chief Minister informed that, Government has taken various schemes and initiatives to encourage Fish Farming in an aim to upgrade Fish production process across the state. Chief Minister also said that earlier fishes had to be imported from the neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Bhutan also from other states to meet the demand and requirement of the state, but now the fish farmers of the state are being encouraged for more fish production in order to reduce the import rate from other regions.
Efforts are being made to enhance the livelihood of fish farmers in the state. Youths of this state, especially in the rural areas have the potential to become self-reliant through fish farming, Chief minister said, adding that new water reservoirs are being created and build to encourage more fish production. Minister of Fishery Sudhangshu Das said that the state has an annual demand of 1.76 lakh Metric Tonne of Fish. The State Government has undertaken various schemes to meet and fulfill this demand, Fishery Minister said adding that initiatives have been taken to develop integrated aqua parks in the State. Various co-operative societies and self-help groups have been assisted with various aids to boost Fish farming and production in the state, the Minister said, adding that about 116 Hectares of new water bodies have been constructed to expand Fish production.
