Tripura Police have apprehended a 22-year-old woman, identified as Sushmita Sarkar, in connection with the murder of Durga Prasanna Deb, popularly known as Viki Deb, who served as the secretary of the esteemed Bharat Ratna Sangha club. The arrest of Sarkar comes on the heels of the apprehension of Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury, aged 65, in relation to the same case. The tragic incident unfolded on April 30 when Deb was fatally shot at point-blank range inside his car near Shalbagan. Police investigations suggest that the murder may be linked to an ongoing dispute between rival factions within the club.
Following the heinous crime, Deb’s body was transferred to a private hospital mortuary for further proceedings. Both Sarkar and Chowdhury have been remanded to police custody as part of ongoing investigations into the murder.According to preliminary findings, the assailant, donning a mask, approached Deb’s vehicle, demanded that he lower the window, and subsequently fired three shots at close range, resulting in Deb’s untimely demise.
Kiran Kumar, the Superintendent of Police for Tripura West District, has hinted at the possibility of the murder being a consequence of pre-existing animosity between local factions associated with the club.
