A fragile calm returned to parts of the Garo Hills region in Meghalaya on Friday, prompting authorities to partially relax the curfew in two districts affected by violence related to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
Officials said curfew was relaxed for four hours in West Garo Hills district, from 9 am to 1 pm, allowing residents to step out and purchase essential commodities. In neighboring East Garo Hills district, Deputy Commissioner RP Marak ordered a longer relaxation period from 8 am to 5 pm.
Authorities stated that although the situation remains tense, it is currently under control. Security forces have been deployed across sensitive areas and are maintaining a close watch to prevent any further escalation. Residents have been urged to maintain peace during the relaxation period and avoid activities that could disturb public order. Officials also warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone violating the restrictions.
The unrest began on March 10 during the nomination process for the GHADC elections when clashes broke out between tribal and non-tribal groups. According to officials, two people were killed in police firing during the violence, while several properties were damaged.
Incidents of arson, vandalism and looting were reported in parts of Tura town, forcing authorities to impose curfew and deploy the Army to restore order.
The violence was triggered after the Meghalaya High Court struck down an order issued by the GHADC that required candidates to possess a Scheduled Tribe certificate to contest the elections. The ruling sparked protests and heightened tensions in the Garo Hills region.
Following the deterioration of the law-and-order situation, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the GHADC elections, originally scheduled for April 10, had been postponed until further notice.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts are underway to restore normalcy in the affected districts.
