Expanding Horizons: Cherlapalli Terminal to Launch New Amrit Bharat Express Services to Nagercoil and Kamakhya

In a major boost to long-distance rail connectivity from Hyderabad, the South Central Railway (SCR) has announced the introduction of two new Amrit Bharat Express trains linking the newly developed Cherlapalli terminal with Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu and Kamakhya in Assam. The inaugural run for the Cherlapalli–Nagercoil service is scheduled for today, March 11, 2026, while the service to Kamakhya, a prominent pilgrimage destination in the Northeast, will be flagged off on March 13. These state-of-the-art, indigenous “push-pull” trains are designed specifically to provide a high-speed yet affordable travel experience for the common man, featuring improved aesthetics and enhanced passenger amenities in non-AC sleeper and general second-class coaches. By connecting the southern tip of the peninsula and the gateway to the Seven Sister states from a single hub in Telangana, the Indian Railways aims to facilitate smoother socio-economic exchange and cater to the heavy volume of migrant and pilgrim traffic across these high-demand corridors.

The Cherlapalli station, which was recently inaugurated as the fifth major rail terminus for Greater Hyderabad, serves as the primary base for these new services, helping to decongest the heavily burdened Secunderabad and Hyderabad (Nampally) stations. The route to Nagercoil will pass through major transit hubs in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, including Guntur, Nellore, and Madurai, significantly reducing travel time for passengers heading to the deep south. Similarly, the Kamakhya-bound Amrit Bharat Express will act as a critical lifeline for travelers moving toward the Northeast, providing a safe and cost-effective alternative to existing express services. Railway officials have emphasized that these trains are equipped with advanced features like semi-automatic couplers for a jerk-free ride and modern fire detection systems, ensuring that budget-friendly travel does not compromise on safety or comfort. As these new links become operational, they are expected to foster regional tourism and trade, marking another milestone in the modernization of India’s vast railway network under the Amrit Bharat initiative.
