Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, leader of the TIPRA Motha Party (TMP), stated that the results of the upcoming elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) will play a critical role in determining if Tripura will have a tribal chief minister following the 2028 Assembly elections. While the election dates have not yet been announced, the current council’s term will end on April 20. During a rally in Killa, Debbarma emphasized that the election outcomes could significantly influence the likelihood of a tribal leader ascending to the position of chief minister in the next Assembly.
Debbarma expressed concerns regarding what he described as a “secret deal” between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and current Chief Minister Manik Saha, suggesting that Saha is ineffective in safeguarding the rights of indigenous communities. He articulated the belief that the BJP is systematically undermining tribal institutions, alleging that funds intended for village committees have not been dispensed, which has hindered development within tribal regions. Furthermore, he claimed that elections for these village committees have not been conducted for several years.
The TMP leader also anticipated that the BJP would deploy extensive financial resources to secure victory in the tribal council elections, cautioning voters against being swayed by monetary influence. As he rallied support for his party, Debbarma highlighted the significance of the upcoming elections for the protection of indigenous people’s rights and future in Tripura.
