The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested Apollo Chakma, an armed member of the Parbotto Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), while he was crossing from Bangladesh into India via Gate No.2 at the Amrit Para BSF camp in Tripura. During the arrest, the BSF confiscated a walkie-talkie from him, and he was subsequently handed over to Rashyabari Police Station, facing multiple charges including cow smuggling and illegal entry into India.
The PCJSS, led by Santu Larma, has been labeled a terrorist organization by the Guwahati High Court in a ruling related to arms smuggling by its members. This group has evolved into a cross-border smuggling operation implicated in various illegal activities such as drug trafficking and the smuggling of Indian cattle and Burmese cigarettes. In July-August 2025, significant protests erupted in South Tripura against the PCJSS for its criminal activities, especially concerning drug trafficking and the negative impact on local youth.
Historically, during the Interim Government of Bangladesh, the PCJSS was reported to collaborate with anti-India factions. The withholding of funds for the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council has led to increased desperation within the PCJSS, resulting in a surge of cross-border criminal activities by its members.
