Linguistic Diversity Highlighted as Mother Language Day Observed in Guwahati, Agartala

International Mother Language Day was observed on February 21 at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commissions in Guwahati and Agartala, underscoring its importance. In Guwahati, the event began at 10 am with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Shaheed Minar, where Assistant High Commissioner Zikrul Hasan Fahad honored the martyrs of the Language Movement. This was followed by a community singing of songs commemorating Ekushey February. The day’s events continued with an afternoon discussion that included an Iftar gathering, featuring messages from Bangladesh’s President and Prime Minister, discussions on the significance of Mother Language Day, special prayers, and the Iftar meal.

In Agartala, the ceremonies also started with the national flag flown at half-mast. Assistant High Commissioner Hasan Al Bashar Abdul Ulayee laid floral tributes at a temporary Shaheed Minar on the mission premises, attended by school students who showed their respects. During the observance, messages from the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister of Bangladesh were shared. Special prayers were conducted in memory of the Language Movement martyrs, alongside a documentary screening that depicted this significant historical event. The observance included a cultural program with performances by students. In the afternoon, distinguished guests were set to lay wreaths at the Shaheed Minar and participate in a moment of silence to honor the martyrs, followed by a discussion focused on the meaning and importance of International Mother Language Day at the High Commission office.
