Uber bike riders in Agartala have declared an indefinite suspension of services in response to the implementation of the ‘Bike Saver’ option, which they argue has significantly reduced their earnings. On Wednesday, over 200 riders gathered for a protest near Heritage Park, expressing their concerns over dwindling income, poor working conditions, and the lack of support from the company’s local office. The riders pointed out that deteriorating road conditions, exacerbated by ongoing Smart City projects, have made commuting increasingly problematic, while they continue to operate without sufficient institutional support.
The introduction of the lower-fare ‘Bike Saver’ option has been cited as a primary factor adversely impacting their earnings, resulting in substantial financial distress for many riders. Furthermore, the protesters noted that the payment rates for drivers in Tripura are lower compared to those in neighboring states, which, along with rising fuel prices and maintenance costs, has added to their economic strain. One rider emphasized that their livelihoods have been greatly affected and that services will remain suspended until the ‘Bike Saver’ category is revoked.
