Google has confirmed that Android 17 Beta 1 will be released soon for public testing, marking the beginning of the next major Android upgrade cycle. The announcement follows the rollout of Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 and signals a shift in Google’s release strategy.
Unlike previous years, Android 17 will skip a separate Developer Preview phase and move directly into beta testing. Experimental features are now being tested earlier through Android Canary builds, making the beta programmed the primary public testing track. The first build carries the internal label “26Q2.”
Users already enrolled in the Android Beta Programmed and running Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 will automatically receive the Android 17 Beta 1 update. However, once installed, users typically cannot revert to a stable version without wiping their device until the beta cycle concludes, expected around June 2026.
Though official features remain unconfirmed, Android 17 — reportedly codenamed “Cinnamon Bun” — is expected to bring performance improvements, refinements to Material 3 design, and enhanced on-device AI capabilities ahead of a likely mid-2026 stable release.
