The 48th Kokborok Day was celebrated across Tripura with a series of programmes aimed at promoting indigenous language and cultural heritage on Monday.
The state-level programme was organised at Rabindra Bhavan in Agartala by the State Department of Kokborok and Other Minority Languages Rights and Education.
A colourful rally was taken out from the Rabindra Bhavan premises in the morning, which passed through various parts of Agartala city.
MLA Rampada Jamatia and former MLA Atul Debbarma led the rally along with senior officials of the department. Both leaders expressed hope for the further enrichment of the Kokborok language.
Students from different schools and colleges participated in the rally wearing traditional attire.
Meanwhile, the district-level celebration of the 48th Kokborok Language Day was held at Bachaibari Community Hall in Khowai district.
Tripura Forest, Science and Technology Minister Animesh Debbarma attended the programme as the chief guest. MLA Nirmal Biswas, EM Ananta Debbarma, Chairperson of Khowai Zilla Parishad Aparna Singh Roy, and other dignitaries were also present.
Addressing the gathering, Forest Minister Debbarma said that Kokborok is the mother tongue of the indigenous people and a vital part of their identity.
He said that just as a child cannot grow without the care of a mother, a society cannot achieve progress without protecting and promoting its mother language.
In Gomati district, Kokborok Day was observed at Karbook Panjiham Higher Secondary School, highlighting the significance of the Kokborok language and culture, followed by cultural performances.
Similar programmes were also held at Kalaban Sadar Para High School under Matabari block.
Meanwhile, the Amarpur Sub-Divisional Administration organised a programme at Anandadhara Hall.
On the occasion, a 30-day training camp was launched by the Tribal Welfare Department, and a sub-division-level tribal folk-dance competition was held as part of the celebrations.
In Unakoti district, Kokborok Day and a tribal folk dance competition were organised at Bhagat Singh Hall, Kailashahar.
