A fire broke out in the operation theatre of Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Sunday morning, triggering panic but causing no injuries.
The hospital’s close proximity to the Geetanjali fire station enabled firefighters to reach the spot within minutes, preventing a major tragedy.
According to Delhi Fire Services, the blaze suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in medical equipment started around 10.45 am while a woman was undergoing delivery in the OT.
Several newborns were present in the ICU on the same floor. Hospital staff and fire personnel quickly evacuated all patients, later shifting them to the hospital’s Panchsheel Park branch.
The fire spread rapidly due to medical equipment and oxygen cylinders, filling staircases with thick smoke. Firefighters ventilated the area by breaking a window and brought the fire under control within an hour. An investigation into the cause is under way.
