Tripura’s political atmosphere has once again come under strain after Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury strongly condemned the alleged assault on party leaders during an official meeting on the Special Identification Register (SIR) in South District. In a letter addressed to Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha on Wednesday, Chaudhury termed the incident “despicable” and “audacious,” calling for immediate and strict action against those responsible. According to him, CPI(M) leaders Balaram Reang, Ashish Paul, and Prasun Reang were physically attacked inside the office of the Santirbazar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) on September 16. The attack, he alleged, was carried out by “known BJP miscreants” in full view of government officials.
The injured leaders were rushed to Santirbazar District Hospital. However, Chaudhury alleged that the same group of attackers followed them there and again attempted to assault them, even in the presence of the SDM and police personnel. Expressing shock, he noted that no immediate action was taken by the authorities to prevent the second incident. Fearing further escalation, Chaudhury said he had to personally intervene with the South District Magistrate to ensure the safety of the victims, who were later shifted to GBP Hospital in Agartala. “What kind of democratic system do we belong to, where opposition leaders are attacked inside a government office and even in a hospital, without any action against the perpetrators?” Chaudhury asked in his letter.
He further alleged that despite the attackers being identified, neither the SDM nor the SDPO filed an FIR or made arrests, raising serious concerns about impartiality in governance. Chaudhury urged the administration to act decisively and restore public faith in law enforcement.
