Tripura State Legal Services Authority’s Member Secretary, Jhuma Datta Choudhury, on Tuesday announced the launch of a 90-day special mediation drive aligned with the National Legal Services Authority’s (NALSA) nationwide initiative. Since the campaign began on July 1, over 1,000 cases have been referred to nine mediation centres across the state.

Addressing the media, Choudhury said the drive is part of a national effort by NALSA and the Supreme Court’s Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee to ease the burden on courts by promoting out-of-court settlements. Courts in Tripura have been advised to send eligible cases—including matrimonial issues, motor accident claims, consumer disputes, inheritance conflicts, and eviction matters—for mediation.

She emphasized that mediation is a voluntary and confidential process where trained mediators assist parties in reaching mutual agreements without imposing decisions. Notably, Tripura has broadened its mediator base to include community and religious leaders, alongside legal professionals. Over 200 mediators have been trained so far, with 75 certified in April. The drive runs through September 30, 2025.
