Amid growing public concern over rising electricity costs in Tripura, the state government has now approved a hike in water charges, extending the revised rates to Nagar Panchayat areas. Previously applicable only in Urban Local Body (ULB) regions, the new rates are now uniform across urban and Nagar Panchayat zones, as per a notification issued by the Tripura Jal Board on May 8, 2025.
According to reports from Amarpur, residents under the Nagar Panchayat who earlier paid Rs. 40 per month for drinking water will now pay Rs. 60 monthly, resulting in an annual increase of Rs. 240 per household. The hike took effect on June 1, 2025, following the 5th Board Meeting of the Tripura Jal Board, chaired by the Chief Minister.
While commercial water charges remain unchanged at Rs. 300/month, the penalty for regularizing unauthorized domestic connections has been raised from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500. The order also mandates meter-based billing for all commercial connections and record verification with AMC.
