The state-run Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH) would soon offer tissue transplantation, Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii said Thursday. Speaking at a party gathering in the town of Lunglei in south Mizoram, she stated that the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) has assisted in making the required preparations for the tissue transplantation service at ZMCH. According to the health minister, a transplant coordinator, consultant, and other personnel have been identified. “An operating room has also been set up at Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH), and the license is still pending,” she stated.
Medical professionals will travel from other states to perform kidney and heart transplants here once the license is acquired, she said. “A heart transplant at ZMCH will only cost Rs. 1 lakh, whereas it costs about Rs. 9 lakh at two private hospitals in Aizawl,” she continued. The Zoram Medical College Society was transformed into a wholly government-owned medical facility by the state government on Wednesday. Zoram Medical College and Hospital is the new name for it. According to her, the administration is working to alleviate the state’s physician and healthcare professional shortfall. “We are taking steps to recruit 100 healthcare workers,” she stated.
