Mizoram’s Minister of State for Power and Electricity, F. Rodingliana, stated his optimism that the 120 megawatt Tlawng Hydro-Electric Project may start construction the next year. According to Rodingliana, who spoke to the media at the proposed dam site along the Tlawng River, close to North Lungleng village in Aizawl district, the Central Water Commission (CWC), which started its survey and investigation work in February 2015, is moving forward with creating the comprehensive project report.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) was given Rs 11.55 crore by the Union Ministry of Water Resources in 2014 to conduct the project’s survey and investigation. Plans for a 120-meter-high dam next to North Lungleng hamlet indicate that the project will have a 120 megawatt capacity, according to preliminary survey results. It is anticipated that 187 hectares of cultivable land and 2,888 hectares of uncultivable land will be submerged by the project. According to the assessment, no entire villages will be flooded, even though a number of village council districts would be impacted.

It is anticipated that the dam will extend as far as Ramlaitui in southern Mizoram’s Lunglei district. The topographical survey, geotechnical investigation, seismic study, and building material survey have all been finished by the CWC, and the foundation study has advanced significantly. Drifting and the evaluation of deep subsurface conditions are the remaining challenges. The Tlawng River, the biggest and most important river in the state, will have its dwindling water levels partially restored by the dam’s 1,009.6 million cubic meters of water storage capacity.
