Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana is transforming energy generation in India, aiming to reduce electricity bills to zero by harnessing the immense potential of solar energy. Ratan Lal Nath, the Tripura Power Minister, highlighted the project’s transformative potential by calling it a “game-changer for every household.” He described how the project uses solar energy to give measurable benefits, transcending religious beliefs and harnessing the sun’s boundless power. The PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana was introduced on February 13, 2024, and has already produced 200 gigawatts of solar electricity. Its goal is to produce 500 gigawatts by 2030.
The national government has set aside Rs. 75,021 crore for the program, which would run from 2023–2024 to 2026–2027, in order to promote participation. Special subsidies are given to residential households: Rs. 33,000 per kilowatt for rooftop solar panels up to 2 kW and Rs. 19,800 per kW for subsequent 1 kW installations, with a maximum subsidy of Rs. 85,800 for installations up to 3 kW. Additionally, subsidies of Rs. 19,800 per kW for systems up to 500 kW are available to housing societies and electric vehicle charging installations.
Up to 3 kW of solar panels can be installed by families, and any extra electricity generated can be sold back to Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), guaranteeing a win-win scenario. The greater goal of increasing the proportion of solar energy in India’s power grid was emphasized by the electricity minister. The PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana is poised to become a pillar of India’s renewable energy future with its audacious objectives and clear advantages, promoting sustainable development and providing millions of households with financial savings.
