Agartala’s security is tightened before the NEC Plenary Session

Security in and around Agartala has been greatly bolstered as the 72nd Plenary Session of the North East Council (NEC) begins. Top government officials, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister of DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia, and all of the chief ministers, deputy chief ministers, and governors from the Northeast states, will visit the city during the session, which is scheduled for December 20–21.

On December 11, West District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar stated that additional security measures are in place, particularly in vulnerable areas of the city, in addition to the current security. Regular patrols have been stepped up in these high-alert areas, and fixed barricades have been erected close to the Akhaura Integrated Check Post, which is located close to the Bangladeshi border. The 856-kilometer international border with Bangladesh is not far from Agartala. Security measures are therefore even more crucial for the session.

Throughout the session, the police have promised to take all necessary procedures to keep the peace. Agartala, a city that is steadily gaining relevance in regional political and administrative concerns, will host the NEC Plenary Session for the first time. The security measures are appropriate given the importance of the event, which calls for stringent safety protocols for both attendees and the general public.
