A man has been arrested by the Forest Department in Belonia Sub-division of South Tripura District for possessing raw venison (deer meat) suspected to be poached. Following a tip-off, a joint operation was conducted early on Friday by officials from the Bagafa, Kakulia, and Rajnagar Trishna Wildlife Ranges. The operation led to the arrest of Sunil Das, an auto driver, who was found transporting seven kilograms of deer meat in his vehicle.

Bloodstains were discovered inside the auto and on his hands, prompting suspicions of his involvement in poaching. “We believe Sunil Das is involved in poaching, and investigations are ongoing,” said a forest department official.

This arrest follows a similar case in October, when the Tripura Forest Department seized three country-made guns and suspected poached venison during a raid near the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary. Despite the owner fleeing, officials discovered the guns and meat in a house, underscoring ongoing concerns over wildlife poaching in the region.
