Tripura will soon establish a dedicated cyber crime police station to tackle the rising challenges of cybercrime, DGP Amitabh Ranjan announced on Wednesday. Addressing the press, Ranjan emphasized that with insurgency in Tripura effectively curbed following the mass surrender of NLFT and ATTF militants, the focus has shifted to addressing urban crime and enhancing community policing. “The Chief Minister wants state police efforts geared toward community policing, law and order, and curbing urban extremism,” he noted.
In a strategic shift, the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), previously deployed for counterinsurgency, will receive specialized training to meet new threats. “We plan to enhance the TSR’s capabilities, with training from elite forces like NSG and CISF,” Ranjan said, emphasizing skill upgrades for handling emerging security challenges.The state is also strengthening its police force with modern equipment through central government modernization schemes. “Some advanced equipment have been procured, and more are in the pipeline,” he added. The cyber crime police station aims to boost the force’s capacity in combating online fraud, an area where Tripura’s police have shown significant progress.
Additionally, six TSR companies will soon be deployed to Maharashtra and Jharkhand for election security. “While the Centre requested 15 companies, we committed six due to current needs in Tripura,” said Ranjan, adding that these units will depart post-Diwali.
