A minor girl, who had been missing for over a year after being lured away from her village in Tripura’s Khowai district under the guise of employment, was rescued from Rajasthan by a state police team. One person has been apprehended in connection with the case, an official confirmed on Friday.

According to police sources, the 15-year-old girl was taken from Singichara village in Khowai to Jaipur in April 2023 by a neighbor, promising her domestic work. However, in January this year, she was allegedly coerced into marriage with a man from Rajasthan by some individuals from her village.

Following a complaint lodged by the minor girl’s father on May 6, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Champa Das was dispatched to Rajasthan. The team successfully located the girl, arrested the accused, identified as Ashok Kumar Chowdhury (30), and safely returned them to Tripura on Thursday. On Friday, the accused was produced before a local court in Khowai, where he was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. The minor girl was reunited with her family following her rescue.
