The District and Sessions Court of Gomati district sentenced Rajib Karmakar to 12 years of imprisonment for the kidnapping and sexual assault of his sister-in-law. Addressing the issue, Special Public Prosecutor of Gomati District Court, Paltu Das, highlighted the extensive trial process leading to the verdict, which involved testimonies from 16 witnesses. Das explained, “Rajib Karmakar, residing in Amarpur’s Fatik Sagar area of Gomati District, subjected his wife to torture and made inappropriate advances towards his sister-in-law.
Resorting to violence against his wife if his sister-in-law resisted his advances, the situation culminated on June 3, 2021, when Karmakar forcibly abducted his sister-in-law while she was en route to a tutor’s house and transported her to Chennai.There, he rented a house and subjected her to multiple instances of forced sexual assault.” The atrocities came to light when Karmakar’s father-in-law filed a case with Kakraban Police Station. Subsequently, upon their return to the state, Karmakar was arrested at the airport.
Following meticulous investigation and submission of a charge sheet, the court convicted Karmakar on multiple counts. He received a 3-year prison sentence, along with a fine of Rs 3,000 and one month in jail in default, for kidnapping under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, he was convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, resulting in a 12-year imprisonment term, a fine of Rs 10,000, and three months imprisonment in default.
