Tripura is on the brink of achieving a remarkable medical feat as preparations are underway for the state’s inaugural renal transplant (kidney transplant) at the Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital. Dr. Kanak Chowdhury, Deputy Superintendent of GB Pant Hospital, shed light on the meticulous groundwork undertaken by a dedicated medical team. In an exclusive interview with India Today NE, Dr. Kanak revealed that a specialized team from Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital underwent an intensive seven-day training program at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute in Manipur. This training equipped the team, comprising nephrologists, neurologists, psychological counselors, nursing officers, and doctors, with the necessary skills and expertise for the upcoming surgery.
“This marks a significant milestone in Tripura’s medical history. Our team diligently completed the training at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, observing procedures, receiving hands-on training, and addressing administrative requirements,” shared Dr. Kanak. Highlighting the increasing prevalence of chronic kidney diseases in Tripura, Dr. Kanak emphasized hypertension and diabetes as primary contributing factors. While two patients have been identified for the transplant, infrastructure finalization is underway. A visit from the Shija team will ensure readiness and address any deficiencies before the commencement of surgeries.
“We are adopting a phased approach to raise public awareness and ensure optimal outcomes. Chronic kidney diseases pose a significant health challenge in Tripura, and this initiative is a collective endeavor of AGMC and the state government. We are committed to realizing this milestone and remain hopeful for a successful outcome,” Dr. Kanak said.
